A Super-Sized Serving Of Compassion

Today my mind is left spinning, my heart is left soaring and my soul is left singing after yesterday's book study collaboration.
Overdosing on gratitude, I have six things to share.

1. Whether you're a seasoned veteran or a newbie on Twitter, please join us tonight for this #TeacherFriends tweet chat. Use tweetdeck.com or tweetchat.com to converse with us in real time at 8 pm central. Signing up is free; tweet!

2. Click {here} for an outstanding article by Signe Whitson in the Huffington Post outlining eight great ways to teach compassion.

3. On the home front ... our son Joshua broke the growth plate in his elbow at Camp and yesterday was cast day. Prognosis: three weeks ... not too bad.

As a sign of support, Jacob, John and I decided to only use our left hands as we played Bananagrams last night. What a challenge. With a new appreciation, elevated empathy and Joshua's permission, the three of us went back to using
both hands for a riveting round of Canasta.

4. You may remember Ann and Susan, co-authors of Great Group Games, from their guest post at the Corner a few years back. Well, they've invited me to guest post at The Asset Edge blog today. Click {here} to go there.

5. At our ASCA National Counseling Conference this summer, First Lady Michelle Obama encouraged counselors to help students #reachhigher. Then my cyberspace colleague Dr. Erin Mason took that campaign a step further and challenged us {here} to walk the talk . So here's my action plan:

At every speaking engagement this summer, I am talking advocating for  pushing voice and choice. To empower our superheroes to soar, we simply must gift them with wings to fly ... and then get out of their way. Let them fall out of the nest a few times, scrape some skin, bruise a little, break a bone even. If we want self-reliance and self-regulation, we must give our future leaders opportunities to be self-reliant and to self-regulate. It's not rocket science that we can't get stronger if we don't practice our skills.

6.  Finally, I want to thank you, my readers, for walking alongside of me on this incredible journey we call life. June was so busy that my three-year blogging anniversary flew right by without notice. It is with enthusiasm and exuberance that I head into my fourth year blessed beyond words.

Please come back tomorrow to see what Amy at
has to say about Chapter 2: U is for Unconditional Love.
She's celebrating some great news, so if you head her way right now, you can enter for your chance to win a pay-it-forward signed copy of the book.

How will you serve up some compassion today?

  1. {Hugs} to your son! Your family's idea to only use your left hands is fabulous! Our youngest son fractured his ankle two weeks ago and will have his boot cast removed next Tuesday.

I'm looking forward to the Twitter chat!
